Matt Armstrong was an Aberdeen legend, their leading player in the pre-war years. Armstrong was a very prolific scorer with 164 goals in 232 games but he lost a lot of his career to World War II and without that he would probably still be the club's top scorer of all time. He was a quick and skilful centre forward who had a variety of strengths that made him a very effective attacker. He was a good dribbler who could create chances for himself by skilfully going past defenders. He was also good in the air and scored many goals with headers. He could even score with free kicks which he hit straight with his powerful shot; he was also a threat from outside the box because of his strong shot. Armstrong was also good at linking up with his teammates and provided plenty of chances for other players, and was especially good at crossing which was quite unique for a striker of the time. He had a fantastic partnership with inside forward Willie Mills and they combined for a huge number of goals. On the other hand he could be an inconsistent finisher and missed some easy chances, especially when 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, although this never stopped him from scoring many goals. World War II started when he was 28 years old, and while he played games in the unofficial wartime league for Aberdeen, the war virtually ended his professional career.
