INFO:Pickering was an inside left. He spent his whole career at Sheffield United, playing 398 matches and scoring 119 goals from 1925 to 1948. He capped once for England in a match against Scotland in 1933.
Considered as Billy Gillespie's natural successor, Pickering was a tall but not strong attacking player, who could make great long strides. He could manipulate the ball, was a smart passer and master of the long cross field pass − featured in Sheffield United's playstyle since the 1890s. He used to act further back behind than usual inside forwards, orchestrating the forward line with astute passes and letting the distribution did its course. He was a stylish player, who relied also on his technique, skills and excellent ball control rather than only his passing ability. His game was thoughtful and simple but he also was a threat for the opposing goalkeepers thanks to his fast runs and powerful shots with both feet from the edge of the penalty area.
