Alec Smith was one of the earliest legends of Scottish football, a fantastic left winger, probably the best worldwide before World War I and even one of the best before World War II. He had a long and successful career with 642 games and 200 goals in his 21 years with his only club. Alec was known for his brilliant dribbling, excellent pace and crossing, great scoring record and his intelligent play on the left wing. He was a real terror on the wing and could carry the ball long distances and then either send in accurate crosses or score himself with his excellent shooting. He was a fast sprinter and his combination of pace and stylish dribbling was difficult to defend against. It was said he almost never had a bad game, and he was both a prolific scorer and the main creative force of the team. He had a strong partnership with the striker Robert Hamilton with whom he combined for hundreds of goals. Smith was the star player of the Rangers team that won 4 consecutive league titles from 1898 to 1902, even achieving a perfect record of 18 out of 18 wins in the 1898/99 season, an extremely rare achievement. He and Bobby Walker were the main stars of the Scotland national team during that time and he earned 20 caps for his country.
