Boyle was a left-back who spent most of his career at Sheffield United, playing 187 matches and scoring once from 1898 to 1904. He played also for several other clubs including Sunderland. Considered one of the best defenders at the time, he won 5 caps for Ireland and could've cap way more but he preferred not missing games for Sheffield United.
Not too different to his teammate Harry Tickett, Boyle was a dashing, fearless and very strong defender, a hard but fine tackler who played without a care in the world but also a great kicker of the ball.
