He spent the majority of his career at Casale where he played from 1909 to 1919 and 1921 to 1925, for a total 148 appearances and 34 goals. He won the historic 1913-14 Italian championship with Casale. He also played for Juventus from 1919 to 1921. He capped for Italy 2 times in 1914. After starting his career as wing-half, Gallina transitioned into an excellent centre-forward and formed an exceptional forward trio alongside Angelo Mattea and Amedeo Varese at Casale. Gallina was a striker who always tried to keep style, finesse and consistency in all of his actions. He was a good dribbler who also possessed excellent vision which he especially showed in his early career when he was deployed in midfield, impressing even in defense thanks to his speed that allowed him to counter and neutralise the opposition's attacks. It's as a striker that he had his biggest success, though. The aforementioned trio was like one player and Gallina set the game, distributing the ball to Mattea or Varese depending on the tactics and the offside trap of the time that required three men between the opposing goal and the player who received the ball. And Gallina wasn't slow nor he used to waste time. He was fast like the rest of Casale's team. He wasn't as prolific as the other two main strikers but he was still a threat for any goalkeeper due to his powerful left-footed shots and excellent headers. He had great instinct inside the box, always positioned well to receive a cross. Furthermore, he was considered the technically most gifted player in Casale's team. QUOTES: Spoiler: show |
