Barbesino was a half-back. He spent almost his entire career at Casale where he made 83 appearances and scored 11 goals from 1911 to 1920, winning the 1913-14 Italian championship as captain. He also played for Legnano in 1917-18. He retired afterwards. The first ever Casale player to represent Italy national team, he capped 5 times and scored once.
Barbesino was a tall player and remarkably able header. Casale's captain and undisputed leader, he was the one to always drive his teammates forward in the opposition's half with courage and spirit of sacrifice as he was the first player to enter the pitch and the last to leave it. Barbesino was gifted with great technique, dynamism, speed and agility on the ball. He also had a solid shot with good power. Tall but thin, he wasn't too effective when defending one-on-one as he was often dribbled by his opponent. However, he wasn't fragile given that he could easily put the opponents down if he tackled them. He was capable of holding up the first back-line and intercepting the ball timely before starting the attack with a pass forward. Barbesino also scored three penalties in the 1913-14 season: one against Alessandria and two against Hellas.
