He spent the majority of his career at Casale where he played from 1923 to 1926, 1927 to 1929 and in 1932-33, for a total 94 appearances and 52 goals. He had the chance to play for Bologna in the 1926-27 season but he only played 2 matches, one in Divisione Nazionale and one in Coppa Italia, though scoring one goal in both games. He also played for Torinese, Legnano, Seregno and Imperia where he retired in 1936. Gabba was an efficient striker gifted with good technique, dribbling, pace off the ball and remarkable shooting skills. He also possessed a good heading and great instinct to get on loose balls faster than the defenders. His great understanding with his teammates allowed him to carry the forward line while his positional sense constantly put him in condition to receive crosses. Gabba was mostly known for the extraordinary power of his shots. The centre-forward himself once said in a 1982 interview that the legendary goalkeeper Giampiero Combi feared only one striker in Italy: Gino Gabba. Following his underwhelming experience at Bologna, he immediately recovered upon his return to Casale, but he was eventually excluded from the team unpaid during the 1928-29 season after he had punched an opponent during a match against La Dominante that also earned him a red card. One year prior, Gabba had set the record for two goals scored in the shortest span of time when he beat Hellas Verona's goal twice within 47 seconds in a 8-0 win. Overall, Casale's striker was very promising but a lack of consistency, alternating good and underwhelming performances, and a questionable attitude stopped his growth. QUOTES: Spoiler: show |
