De Giovanni was a goalkeeper. He spent almost his entire career at Casale from 1913 to 1927, making 120 appearances. Attilio Gallina's reserve during Casale's title winning season, De Giovanni became the starter since 1914. He was often considered to play for the Italian national team and even took part to some unofficial international matches in the early 1920s.
Regarded as one of the best Italian goalkeepers of the 1910s and 1920s, De Giovanni was very short but gifted with cat-like reflexes. He rarely used to come off his goal but when he did he would target the striker rather than ball. He was more comfortable between the posts due to his great dives, spectacular saves and remarkable catching. He held his own even against difficult and powerful shots that gave him the chance to show his phenomenal skills that always excited the crowd.
