József Viola was a central half back. His career started in 1919, playing for Hungarian team Törekvés and German team Berliner SV. After two years at Spezia from 1920 to 1922, he transferred to Juventus where he had his best time, making 57 appearances and scoring 4 goals from 1924 to 1927. He had a second stint in 1929-30, playing 21 more matches. He retired in 1932 after a couple seasons at Atalanta. He capped for Hungary once in 1920.
Viola was a versatile, technically gifted midfielder, considered by many Juventus third best half back after Luis Monti and Carlo Parola. Viola wasn't remarkably tall and lacked of speed in the short sprint. Nonetheless, he was extremely strong, had outstanding stamina and loved playing rough. Despite that, he was fair and often even led his opponent to commit foul on him. He was excellent in the air as his jump was so superb and timely that it made up for his lack of height while his headers were so powerful that when he passed the ball with the head it looked like he hit it with his feet. He remained in the back during the defensive phase, keeping both opposing wingers on guard, taking the ball off one of them with confidence, passing it accurately to one of his wingers. He then went back to his position, ready to intercept another ball as if his feet attracted the ball. He played the ball simply as he usually delivered long accurate passes that barely touched an opponent before reaching a forward inside the box. Although, when he couldn't make a pass, he challenged even multiple opponents, dribbling them, keeping the ball on his feet. One of the key players in the 1925-26 Scudetto winning season, he was named man of the match in the league final and described by the journalists as a gladiator during the entire season. Viola proved his value also as full back, position where he was deployed in the last period with Juventus. A team leader, he had though a difficult attitude inside and outside the field. He even bickered numerous times with journalist because he didn't like critics.
