McKinlay was a left-back or left-half, capable as inside forward and deployed in other positions in case of emergency. He spent almost his entire career at Liverpool, making 434 appearances from 1910 to 1929, scoring 35 goals. He was team captain in the 1919-20 season and from 1921 to 1928. He capped for Scotland in 2 occasions in 1922.
An atypical back, he was offensive minded and occasionally deployed as inside to take advantage of his excellent attacking abilities. He could control the ball as if it was tied to his boots, and he was gifted with remarkable quickness, agility, and amazing shooting skills. He scored many times, and only 4 of his goals were penalties. His most memorable goal likely is an outstanding shot from nearly ten meters inside his own half in a 2-1 win against West Ham United on 16 January, 1926. He could score regardless of the position he was deployed in. If he had the chance, he would pick up the ball in his half, make a solo effort, and burst the ball into the net. Furthermore, he was a free kick specialist who could hit the ball with terrific power but also a remarkable touch. His kicks were so powerful that in a 1922-23 match against Everton he passed the ball back to goalkeeper Elisha Scott who had to make an amazing save. He's considered one of the pioneers of the overlapping run. If he had been more aggressive in terms of offensive qualities, he could've become one of the best inside forwards of his time.
