INFO:Barson was a centre-half. His career started in 1911 at Barnsley. He then played for Aston Villa from 1919 to 1922, making 108 appearances and scoring 10 goals. During this period, he capped for England once in 1920. He had his longest stay at Manchester United, playing 152 matches from 1922 to 1928, scoring 4 goals. He then played for Watford, Hartlepool United, Wigan Borough, and Rhyl Athletic, retiring in 1935.
A tall and imposing man, very difficult to dribble and unrivalled in the air, Barson was known mostly for his leadership but also his hard hitting no-nonsense style of play. He was hated by any supporter of any opposing team due to his reckless tackling. He didn't care about timing and ball recovering. He simply crashed into his opponents, often deliberately. After an FA Cup semifinal match against Manchester City in 1926, he was suspended for six games by the FA because of his constantly dangerous play. His fate wasn't different while playing for Aston Villa and Watford as he received a seven-month and a six-month ban respectively. While he was much more focused in the defence during his time at Manchester due also to his advanced age, his game was more varied at Aston Villa. Surely, he stood out for his fiery temperament, outstanding strength and risky tackles that earned him the reputation of hardest man and decades later comparisons with the likes of Norman Hunter and Roy Keane. However, he was extremely intelligent and in possession of the ability to work with the effort of three players, supporting his own defence and then immediately starting a new attack. Furthermore, his unmatched ability in the air allowed him to score a decent amount of goals for Aston Villa, the first of which being a header from thirty yards against Sheffield United.
