INFO:Spence was a right winger and centre forward. He spent the majority of his career at Manchester United, making 510 appearances from 1919 to 1933, scoring 168 goals. He then played for Bradford City and Chesterfield before retiring in 1938. He capped for England 2 times in 1926, scoring 1 goal.
One of Manchester United's most popular and prominent players of the 1920s and a model of consistency, Spence was distinguished for his brilliant technique, nimble footwork, keen eye for goal, commitment and great energy. He was very quick and capable of entertaining the crowds with continuous dribbling and plenty of goals. What he needed was only a teammate who would give him the ball. In fact, it was famous the supporters' chant "Give it to Joe". And not only he could score, but he could cross the ball too. He would've been a perfect addition to the successful Ernest Mangnall's "Red Devils". Unfortunately, he played in a quite weak squad. Despite that though a lot of people went to the stadium just to see him play. His influence in Manchester United's game was so big that he earned the nickname "Mr. Football".
