INFO:
Sandy Turnbull was an inside-forward. His career started in 1902 at Manchester City, where he made 119 appearances in four seasons, scoring 61 goals. He then spent the rest of his career at Manchester United, playing 247 matche from 1907 to 1915 and scoring 101 goals. He tragically died in 1917 as a soldier during World War I.
Originally an inside-right, Turnbull was turned into primarily an inside-left during his time at Manchester United. The Scottish forward was a deadly, prolific scorer, and a tough, uncompromising, unconventional player who would do whatever it takes to have the best of his opponent. While he was temperamental, he wasn't a hardworker. Thus, he was forced to play the ball calmly and save energy throughout the match in order to score at any good chance. One of the best headers of the time, he worked perfectly with Billy Meredith as Turnbull was always in the right position to receive the winger's crosses and head the ball in with almost effortless grace. During the 1908-09 season, Turnbull's hard style of play resulted in an injury that limited his efficiency for the following years. He eventually had a decisive downfall after the departure of coach Ernest Mangnall.
