His older brother Béke brought him to Ferencvárosi Torna Club (whose pitch is located on Soroksári street in Budapest). József still was a teenager when made their league team. In 1901 he was the second-best scorer in the Hungarian league, in 1902 he was national runners-up with FTC, and national champion in 1903. In 1903 and the following season he also was considered one of the most valuable players in the league. Although József Pokorny was not very gifted technically, he was a physically incredibly powerful centre forward. He reached his peak in 1904, when he was Hungarian top scorer with 16 goals to his name. He played for Hungary five times from 1903 to 1905, scoring five goals as well. In 1905 he won the Hungarian championship again with Ferencvárosi TC. Thereafter he retired from big football at the age of 23 (!) without ever having sustained any significant injuries. A specialist in headers and also had good shot, he played his last match against Sparta Praha on June 11, 1905, contributing two goals to a 3:2 win. The public admired him greatly. He later was a successful coach both in Hungary and abroad.
