Attack/Defence Awareness Card: Attack MindedINFO:G. O. Smith was a legendary amateur player considered by many to be the first great centre forward. He interpreted the position in a way that would now be considered a "false 9", in many ways he was decades ahead of his time. He was renowned equally as a creator and a scorer, both his passes and shots were very precise which led to a huge amount of both goals and assists. While he wasn't known for any great pace, he had quick feet and body movements, something that also compensated for his main weakness, his lack of body strength. He wasn't able to resist many challenges but it was difficult to take the ball off him, he was elegant and elusive so defenders couldn't touch him. Like many amateurs at the time, he rejected the aerial game out of principle, and chose to never head the ball. He was known as a total gentleman that never complained about any hard fouls and earned the respect of both amateurs and professionals, which was unique as most amateurs at the time were upper class and looked down on the lower class professionals. As such, he captained both club and country. He was known for his low and hard shots which were the source of all his goals. And his technical abilities were first class, excellent in both close control and when dribbling at full speed with the ball. Such a complete centre forward was probably not seen again until Sindelar in the 30s. Definitely a forgotten legend despite his importance to the evolution of the game.
