He played for the Swiss National Team and was leading goalscorer for the team with 34 goals scored in 68 international appearances. Tricky dribbler and scorer was certainly the most efficient wing half in history. Xam Abegglen wasn't a massive guy. Most of the time he was the smallest on the team. His strengths were the lightning-fast grasp of situations and the planned, rehearsed tricks. This repertoire made him unpredictable and therefore dangerous. To a certain extent he was also a midfielder. He designed attacks that he or someone else later completed. In football with strict man marking, which was widespread at the time, he encountered many an iron foot. He accepted the kicks and remained without thoughts of revenge and without serious injuries. |
