He joined MTK Hungaria in 1915 and helped the club win three consecutive league titles, and in the later two of those seasons (1917/18 and 1918/19),he was a the top European League goalscorer. One of the first professional players. It is said about him thgat he only move when it was absolute necessary. While other were fighting, running, sweating, tackling, dribbling on the pitch, he was just standing like statue, then when the ball came to him, he did not care that 2 of them were hanging at him, one little move and he was clear. He also had a great strenght. Then most of the time the next move his 2 opponent defenders had to do was bringing the ball to the middle line to execute the next after goal kick off. In Nürnberg he was a big star and they called him, Football King. Spoiler: show |

Quote: I did not know him personally, but I do remember when news of his death reached Hungary in 1946. He was as everyone called him, the Fußballkoenig. Capped 15 times by Hungary, 14 of those matches were against Austria, he scored 17 goals. For his club, Hungaria (MTK), he was much more of a prolific scorer. When communists briefly seized power in 1919 he served in some official function, for which he had to go into exile. He lived in Austria for many years, that is when he coached FK Austria. Later he returned to Hungary and became the coach of his old club. Players, most who did not see him play, were suspicious of this very corpulent (well, fat!) guy, who did not look like a footballer at all. One of the biggest stars of the team was a fellow by the name of Matyi Cseh, who told me this story. Speci (as Alfred was nicknamed) at one of the practices hung his umbrella from the crossbar and challenged Cseh to hit it from the 18 yd line. Cseh took 10 shots, hit it 5 times. Speci, wearing his street clothes and shoes, took shots alternating his left and right feet. After 7 tries he had 6 hits. He turned to Cseh and said: "I think I quit right now, so your teammates don't lose respect for you." Nobody ever questioned his authority after this. He was one of the true legends of Hungarian football. |
