Fogl spent his entire career with first division side Újpest, where his brother two years older Károly played. Together the two formed in the 1920s, a defensive pair that, in European football as Fogl lock (Fogl-gát) was known. While the right-back Károly was considered a leading player, was the next József used as tireless worker who also had a good shooting technique.
