Fogl spent his entire career with first division side Újpest, where his brother two years older Károly played. Together the two formed in the 1920s, a defensive pair that, in European football as Fogl lock (Fogl-gát) was known. While the right-back Károly was considered a leading player, was the next József used as tireless worker who also had a good shooting technique. During his time in the Hungarian football was dominated by the two traditional clubs FTC and MTK, for Újpest gave it mostly for second or third places. Also in the Cup final you had to give not less than four times the two rivals fought. 1929 Violet achieved with victory over Sparta Prague and SK Rapid Wien the final of the Mitropacups, where the team was to Fogl, Stefan Auer and Albert Ströck Slavia Prague with a total score of 7:3 defeated.
