Dempsey is a former secondar striker and attacking midfielder, capable of playing as winger and centre forward. His career began in 2004 at New England Revolution, playing 84 matches and scoring 26 goals in three seasons. He transferred to England at Fulham in 2006. Here, he became a legend, making 232 appearances from 2006 to 2013 plus few more in 2014 and scoring 60 goals. He played for Tottenham Hotspur in 2012-13. Then returned to the USA when he joined Seattle Sounders in 2014, scoring 57 goals in 136 games and retiring in 2018. He capped for the United States 141 times, scoring 57 goals and tying Landon Donovan as the national team all-time top scorer.
One of the greatest ever American footballers, Dempsey was known for his terrific work-rate and he was equally efficient as passer and scorer. He was accurate with either foot as much as he was with the head. His style of play was creative and instinctive. While he was an exceptional dribbler, he created many scoring chances for his teammates. He gave everything for all 90 minutes, bringing the best out of himself in crucial matches. Moreover, it wasn't rare to see him in his own half in support of his defenders. He was described as audacious following his spectacular backheel goal from the edge of the penalty box in a 2009-10 Europa League match against Juventus. The episode earned him the reputation of "the guy who walked onto the field and started doing backheels". Unfortunately, he was also overly impulsive as he sometimes showed aggressiveness during physical altercations that earned him several suspensions.
