Pukki is a centre forward, capable of playing also as secondary striker and winger ─ main position especially in his early years. His career began in 2006. He remained in Finland until 2011 ─ he had an unsuccessful experience at Sevilla between 2008 and 2010, making appearances mainly for Sevilla Atlético ─ playing for KTP and HJK. He then had underwhelming seasons at Schalke 04 and Celtic. He eventually became a prolific striker at Brøndby, where he scored 72 goals in 164 matches from 2014 to 2018. On 30 June 2018, he transferred to Norwich City, where he made 140 appearances and scored 71 times so far. Finland top scorer, he scored 33 goals in 100 games so far.
Pukki is a good striker, gifted with a strong physique, notable ball control, accuracy with both feet, great sense of goal and the ability to split the defence or break through it thanks to his pace particularly on long distance, often beating the offside trap. He uses to miss many easy chances from favourable positions but he can score remarkable goals especially with one-touch shots. He possesses superb opportunism that he shows with his runs towards the goal to hit the ball with a tap-in and more rarely with a header. He also is a very good passer, either with one-touches or cut back passes from the side ─ he was used exclusively as secondary striker in the first couple of months at Norwich City. Often not stationary in front of the opposing goal, he moves a lot outside of the box to attract some defenders or even to the midfield in order to participate to the set up of the offense. He proved to be also a good penalty taker especially during the 2020-21 season.
