INFO:
Sun Xiang is a former side back, wing back or side midfielder on the left, occasionally deployed as centre back. His professional career began in 2002 at Shanghai Shenhua, where he made 161 appearances and scored 13 goals until he left 2009. He played on loan for PSV in 2006-07 and Austria Wien in 2007-08. During his time in the Netherlands, he became the first ever Chinese to take part in a UEFA Champions League match. He then had a successful five year experience at Guangzhou Evergrande from 2010 to 2014, playing 153 matches, scoring 3 goals, winning several trophies including four Chinese Super Leagues and an AFC Champions League. He retired in 2016 after two seasons at Shanghai SIPG. He capped for China 69 times, scoring 5 goals.
Sun Xiang showed good sense of position and outstanding footwork as a young player, although he had to strengthen his body, which was quite thin. A natural left-footed, he rarely used the right but whenever he did, he was equally accurate. Despite being mainly a defender, he had good offensive abilities. In fact, PSV coach Ronald Koeman tried to use him as left side midfielder in 2007 to take advantage of Sun Xiang's qualities, ball handling and fine pace. Throughout his career, he was considered one of China's top three left backs in delivering pinpoint passes and early crosses, which were hard to stop for defenders not only for their accuracy but also because they usually were tense, quite fast, with excellent curling. On the other hand, he possessed a poor breakthrough ability, resulting in him staying on the flank most of the times. His defensive awareness was also good as he always knew when to interfere or not thanks to his positional sense. Moreover, he proved to be a good set piece taker, scoring some free kicks while playing for Shanghai Shenhua and Austria Wien.
