Wu Lei is a winger and centre forward, capable of playing as attacking midfielder and secondary striker. He spent most of his career at Shanghai SIPG, where he played 344 matches from 2008 to 2018, scoring 169 goals, 102 of which in the Chinese Super League, becoming the second all-time top scorer in the competition as well as the all-time top scorer for Shanghai SIPG. He transferred to Espanyol on January 2019, scoring 16 goals in 128 games until 2022, when he returned to his previous club. He capped for China 79 times, scoring 27 times up to now.
One of the best Chinese players of the last five years, Wu Lei has been praised for his uncommon goalscoring ability and movements off the ball. His explosive speed on both long and short distance makes him a threat either in counterattacks or when he sprints on the offside line. Highly versatile, he's though mostly used on the flank, proving to be equally effective on either side. He doesn't possess a strong body but he manages to avoid physical contact thanks to his style of play. Other than being a prolific scorer, he's gifted with tactical intellgence, excellent vision, good passing ability. In fact, he provided around 60 assists during his time at Shanghai SIPG. A natural right-footed, he can use also the left. His technique, dribbling, first time touches are remarkable as well as his heading ability combined with an impressive elevation. Reactive and opportunist, he's always ready to tap the ball in when the goalkeeper makes a short save.
