Ghoulam is a left-back. His career began in 2010 at Saint-Étienne, where he played 97 matches in three and a half seasons, scoring once. He transferred to Napoli in January 2014 and had here his best time, making 216 appearances and scoring 3 goals in nearly a decade. He signed for Angers in January 2023. He capped for Algeria 37 times, scoring 5 goals.
One of the best left-backs in the Italian Serie A during his first years at Napoli, Ghoulam distinguished himself for his remarkable offensive prowess, stamina, solid pace and accurate left foot. He was particularly efficient in the crossing as he was capable of delivering high and soft balls or lower and fast ones. He was also notably good in long throw-ins. Even though he rarely scored, he showed a good and powerful shot on his favourite foot. A good set piece taker, he took corners and sometimes free kicks at Napoli. However, he only scored from free kick and penalty with his national team. Despite his tendency of joining the attack frequently, he was careful in the defence as he would always be in position during the opposition's attacks in order to clear the ball, which he could do especially in the air with the help of his good height. He started suffering bad injuries since the 2017-18 season and that affected his growth and the rest of his career so far.
