Allan is a central or defensive midfielder. His career began in 2009 at Vasco da Gama, where he played 93 matches and scored 2 goals in four years. He transferred to Italy, joining Udinese and playing three excellent seasons with 116 games and 2 goals. He then had his most successful time at Napoli, where he played from 2015 to 2020, making 212 appearances and scoring 11 goals. After an unremarkable two-year spell at Everton, he signed for Emirati team Al-Wahda in 2022. He capped for Brazil 10 times, winning the 2019 Copa América.
An excellent and dynamic box-to-box midfielder of outstanding energy and tenacity, Allan is equally efficient in the defence and in the attack. Despite not having a particularly big physique, he has great strength that adds to his remarkable ball winning ability. Once he regains possession of the ball, he usually plays it short before making late runs towards the goal. This characteristic allowed him to score a fair number of goals, some of them being quite good. Also a good assist-man, he can deliver superb long through passes and fine crosses. His solid pace on the ball, technique and repertoire of dribbling make him a complete midfielder.
