After a controversial transfer saga involving Manchester United, he established himself as a useful tactical piece of Chelsea's midfield for the next decade. Mikel wasn't a spectacular player, he was more like a reliable squad player who did his job without any fuss. He was almost always the deepest lying midfielder, acting as a screen in front of Chelsea's defence which allowed his teammates like Lampard, Ballack and Essien to get forward. He combined his defensive discipline with physical strength and good distribution. In fact, he was originally an attacking midfielder and often played in that position for Nigeria. He was sometimes criticised as too conservative in his play, and he sometimes was too slow in releasing the ball after receiving it, leading to him losing possession. But he's become a very popular figure at Chelsea, because of his reliability and long service, and his contribution in some important moments like his strong performance in the 2012 Champions League final. Not a world class player like many of his teammates, but a great player to have in your squad. He made 372 appearances in total for Chelsea. With Nigeria, he was an important player for many years and one of the most capped players. He was a key part of the team that won the African Cup of Nations in 2013 and reached the 2nd round of the World Cup in 2014. He later captained the team at the 2018 World Cup, and finished with 91 caps. |
