Abate is a former right-back or right side midfielder. He debuted at Milan in 2003-04 playing 2 matches. He was then loaned to Napoli, Piacenza and Modena before being sold to Empoli for the 2007-08 season. He transferred to Torino the following year and came back to Milan in 2009-10. This time, he spent ten seasons, making 304 appearances and scoring 3 goals. He retired in 2019. He capped for Italy 22 times, scoring once.
The kind of defender who gave his major contribution in attack, Abate was distinguished for his outstanding pace and was regarded as one of the fastest players in the European top leagues. His sprint combined with excellent stamina and solid dribbling skill enabled him to join the offense efficiently and overcome the opposing defenders. His attacking plays often ended with accurate crosses that could lead to a goal or at least a potential scoring chance. Even though he could rely on incredible speed and sometimes a solid tackling, he wasn't known for his defensive abilities as he didn't always show good positional sense, wasn't too hard to dribble, and often didn't make timely interventions, allowing his opponent to shoot without a problem.
