Hamšik is an attacking or central midfielder. He's been deployed also as defensive midfielder in his late career and sporadically on the sides or as secondary striker in his early years. He spent the majority of his career at Napoli, where he played 520 matches from 2007 to 2019, scoring 121 goals. He was team captain from 2014 to 2019. He holds Napoli's record for most appearances and he's the team's third top scorer. He played also for Slovan Bratislava, Brescia, Dalian Yifang and Göteborg. He signed for Trabzonspor in 2021. He played for Slovakia in 135 occasions, scoring 26 goals. He's currently the national team top scorer and most capped player.
Hamšik is a hardworking playmaker gifted with great personality, fairness, technical qualities, excellent scoring and assist-man abilities. He's a natural right-footed but he's incredibly accurate with the left too. He can deliver great crosses even though he creates scoring chances more frequently with through passes. While his distribution was made mainly of soft but precise balls during his first period at Napoli, his passes gained lot of speed without losing accuracy. He's always been capable of scoring prestigious goals from difficult positions but this qualities improved even more in the second part of his experience at Napoli. He could score from long range, with volleys, on the run and with curled shots. His dribbling skills also got better year by year as he showed some tricks even inside the box, getting past a couple of defenders or the goalkeeper before scoring. Sometimes compared to Pavel Nedvěd and Steven Gerrard, the Czech legend once said in 2010 that Hamšik is the player that most resembles him due to characteristics and playstyle. Hamšik is not too quick but he's elegant in the movements and tireless. He participates a lot in the build-up of the offense, showing outstanding vision, creativity and tactical awareness but also the ability to make offensive runs without the ball and find the best possible spot to receive the ball. He's known for being a good set piece taker particularly from penalties. Although, he's accuracy from the penalty spot was quite inconsistent during his time at Napoli. Instead, he proved to be a good header as he scored for Napoli over ten times with the head.
