Bojinov is a former centre forward, capable of playing as secondary striker or right winger. He began his career at Lecce, where he made 68 appearances from 2001 to January 2005, scoring 19 goals. He was then signed by Fiorentina, where he spent one and a half season, scoring 11 goals in 41 matches. He was loaned to Juventus for the 2006-07 Serie B season, and he scored 7 times in 21 games. Unfortunately, that was his peak as he never reached such levels from that point onwards. He played for Manchester City, Parma, Sporting CP, Hellas Verona, Vicenza, Levski Sofia and Ternana, but without the same success. He seemed to have found a second life at Partizan, where he scored 25 goals in 67 matches from 2015 to 2017. He spent a few more seasons, playing in China, Switzerland, Croatia, Italy and Bulgaria, eventually retiring in 2022. He capped for Bulgaria 43 times, scoring 6 goals.
Considered one of the most promising strikers in Europe in his youth, Bojinov was distinguished for his good ball control in tight spaces, agility, high pace on the short distance, great acceleration, timing in the sprint to beat the offside trap, quick footwork, and remarkable goalscoring abilities. He was left-footed but equally accurate with the right foot. He was very good at shooting while turning, though he preferred delivering thunderous shots with either foot from inside or outside the area, sometimes with the outside of the foot. Also, he possessed a fine heading ability as he could efficiently get into position. He occasionally scored from free kick, proving to be a threat from dead ball situation. Other than being a good finisher, he could also distribute the ball with either short passes or crosses. Often coming in as substitute in the second half, he could turn the game with a goal or by adding more pressure to the opposition's defence.
During his lucky one and a half season at Partizan, he was understandably slower but his technical and shooting skill were still there. In a league like the Serbian one, he was a more than valid striker with his accurate shots on both feet, sometimes powerful and sometimes well-placed, good headers, and assist-providing passes. Although he was mostly deployed as centre forward, he liked moving a lot outside the box and often starting the offense from the midfield.
