Insigne is a left winger, capable of playing as secondary striker or centre forward and more occasionally as attacking midfielder. Raised in Napoli, Insigne debuted in the first team in the 2009-10, playing only one match. Then, he was loaned to Cavese, Foggia and Pescara. He came back to Napoli in 2012, becoming one of the key players for a decade, making 434 appearances, scoring 122 goals and providing nearly 100 assists. He signed for Canadian team Toronto FC in 2022. He capped for Italy 54 times, scoring 10 goals and winning the 2020 UEFA Euro.
Initially deployed exclusively as left winger, Insigne became a versatile forward, efficient in all offensive roles. He's distinguished for his speed, agility, ball control, tactical awareness, passing and shooting skills. He's especially excellent in carrying the ball down the flank, accelerate to cut inside and unleash shots with outstanding curling, mostly from outside the area. While he usually tries to place the ball with accuracy to the top corner, he can also shoot with great power. He also has enough timing of anticipation to get on the ball and score after a goalkeeper save. While he seemed more interested in finishing the attack by himself with his trademark shots in his first years at Napoli, he then became much more of a team player and assist-man, earning also the captain armband.He can create numerous scoring chances for his teammates thanks to his accurate through passes, crosses and elegant first time touches. Moreover, he likes tracking back to midfield in contribution to the defensive phase, covering a lot of ground and starting the play from the back. Despite having a very short physique, he doesn't lack strength so much. Therefore, he doesn't suffer one-on-one challenges. Instead, the defenders have more troubles dealing with his quick and nimble dribbling. He's always fast in the execution, whether he's dribbling, passing or shooting. Even though he was often in charge of free kicks during his Napoli time, he barely scored any. However, he proved to be a very good penalty taker in his last years at the club.
