Thanks to a final series of four consecutive useful results, the Turchini finally protected themselves from the danger of falling to the bottom on the penultimate day, finishing the championship in twelfth place.
Having passed the first round against Caen , Bastia overtook some leading teams in the French Cup such as Monaco in the round of 16 and Lens in the semi-finals, reaching the final against Saint-Étienne who had just become French champions . The 2-1 final delivered the first French Cup to the Turchini, as well as the third European qualification in their history, in the Cup Winners' Cup. A trophy all the more important since it still appears to this day as the club's only major title.
