Italy was tactically flexible: In the first half, they played in 3-2-5/3-3-4 with Ferrini as a right winger on the paper but he was in reality the third man in the midfield helping Radice and Robotti in the defensive tasks. In the second half, Italy played almost in 4-2-4, Salvadore and Maldini swapped their position, Losi became a true right back helping offensively at any occasion on his side and Robotti played deeper in the left side as almost a left back. In the midfield Ferrini played in the right defensive midfielder spot and Radice filled Robotti's former position in the left defensive midfielder role, Rivera tracked slightly deeper on the inside forward/attacking-midfielder position. Upfront, the team was still without a right winger as Menichelli stayed on the left, Sívori on a free inside forward position sometimes playing in the right side and Altafini remained the centreforward
