Infos :

*Óscar HERRERA a fast and energetic right winger, played a key role in the qualifiers, appearing in six matches—three of them as a starter. He missed the 1982 World Cup due to a fibula injury sustained in a collision with the goalkeeper during a match between his club, Naval, and Audax Italiano.

*Héctor PUEBLA played as left winger and attacking midfielder in the 80's and was later reconverted in fullback position. He was a very enduring player, fast, goalscorer, with a good dribble and a capacity of crosses.He played the last preparation matches and was in competition with Miguel Ángel Gamboa, behind the holder Gustavo Moscoso. He contracted a form of typhus, just before the World Cup, which prevented him from participating.

*Victor MERELLO was elected best chilean midfielder in 1980 and, by the newspaper "El grafico", as one of the best n° 8 in Latin America. He was rejected by the coach Luis Alberto Santibáñez who considered that in this position he had Eduardo Bonvallet for the marking, or Carlos Rivas when he was looking for more offensive. Given the team's results, this may not have been the right option.

*Santiago GATICA, capable of playing also as defensive midfielder, was regularly selected in central defense with Mario Soto.He was ultimately not retained in favor of Óscar Rojas who played only one match againt Peru in Copa del Pacífico 1982.

*Luis HORMAZÁBAL was selected in left-back position by "Total Sport" magazine, which asked sports journalists to build their ideal Chile squad just before the 1982 World Cup.The list was completed with Mario Osbén as goalkeeper; Lizardo Garrido, René Valenzuela and Eiias Figueroa in defence; Manuel Rojas, Rodolfo Dubó and Miguel Ángel Neira in midfield; Patrico Yáñez, Carlos Caszely and Miguel Ángel Gamboa in attack. Luis Hormazábal was finally not retained for the benefit of Enzo Escobar.
