JAPAN X AUSTRALIA (Group Stage WC2006 - June 12, 2006) Japan follows mostly the same strategy throughout the match: 1) MAIN STRATEGY ![]() 3-5-2 Formation (3-4-1-2) Kawaguchi - GK Miyamoto (CAPITAIN) - CWP (Usually holds a deeper spot in the backline; the last man standing; focus on deeper clearances) Nakazawa - CB (Moves up the line to make long passes) Tsuboi - CB/RB (Falls a lot to the right to help Komano advance/cover Komano) Fukunishi - DMF Komano - RWB Alex Santos - LWB/LMF (Does not bother much with defensive duties; Keeps the pressure up on Wilkshire and Moore; Incisive runs with the ball) H. Nakata - CMF (Performs attacking runs) Nakamura - AMF (Not only plays by the middle, but also falls a lot by both sides to help the wingers move up) Yanagisawa - CF/SS (Tracks back a lot when Japan loses the ball) Takahara - CF (Follows Yanagisawa's defensive movement, but more by the left flank and with less depth) 2) After Moniwa comes in for an injured Tsuboi (2nd Half) ![]() 3-5-2 Formation (3-4-1-2) Kawaguchi - GK Miyamoto (CAPITAIN) - CWP Nakazawa - CB Moniwa - CB (Switches sides with Nakazawa) Fukunishi - DMF Komano - RWB Alex Santos - LWB/LB (Now helps more with the backline) H. Nakata - CMF Nakamura - AMF Yanagisawa - CF/SS Takahara - CF 3) After Ono comes in for Yanagisawa. ![]() 3-5-2 Formation (3-4-2-1) Kawaguchi - GK Miyamoto (CAPITAIN) - CWP Nakazawa - CB Moniwa - CB Fukunishi - DMF Komano - RWB Alex Santos - LWB/LB H. Nakata - CMF Nakamura - AMF Ono - AMF (Hovers outside the box) Takahara - CF (Stays more inside the box) 4) After Oguro comes in for Moniwa (90th minute), until the game ends. ![]() 4-4-2 Formation (4-2-2-2) Kawaguchi - GK Miyamoto (CAPITAIN) - CB Nakazawa - CB Fukunishi - DMF Komano - RB Alex Santos - LB H. Nakata - CMF Nakamura - AMF Ono - AMF Oguro - CF Takahara - CF NOTES: '56 - Moniwa in, Tsuboi Out (Injury) '79 - Ono in, Yanagisawa Out '90 - Oguro in, Moniwa Out Miyamoto - Yellow Card '30 (Brings down Bresciano) Takahara - Yellow Card '39 (Shoots the ball in protest) Moniwa - Yellow Card '68 (Tackles Kennedy at the edge of the box) H. Nakata can be added as a 2nd FK Taker Both Alex Santos and Nakazawa take long FKs. |

They counter attacked? Performed Pressure? Komano overlapped in the same way as Santos? The Team Strategy according to your feedback seems to me like: *Left Side Attack *Change Sides: Moniwa/Nakazawa - Optional in the Second Half No Pressure No Counter Attack BTW, do you noticed the shirt names in both teams? Like, if Kewell had "H. Kewell" on his back or Hidetoshi Nakata had "Nakata H."? |

Like, if Kewell had "H. Kewell" on his back or Hidetoshi Nakata had "Nakata H."? 1) Japan occasionaly tried to cut off Aussie offensive runs and then engage on quick counters, but I don't think it was the main focus of the team, as Zico seemed to instruct the team to perform short passing more than activating counter runs. I believe Counter Attack could be added as optional. 2) Alex Santos, Hidetoshi Nakata and Shun. Nakamura were keeping high levels of pressure onto Australia's defensive half till Cahill equalised, so I believe Pressure could be added as optional too. 3) Komano did not overlap like Alex Santos. He performed a much more balanced role. 4) Australian players had only their last names on the back, such as "Cahill", "Viduka", "Bresciano". I'm most certain of Harry Kewell only having "Kewell" on the back of his shirt (you can see it against Brazil, when the camera shows him after delivering a volley against Dida). Similarly, Hidetoshi Nakata only had "Nakata" on the back of his shirt. Kōji Nakata comes in as a sub against Brazil, and he has "K. Nakata" on his back. |

Thanks! Counter Attack could be dismissed for that particular game, I believe Ball Possession is a more accurate strategy (ATT if the passed the ball on Australia' half or DEF if they were like Spain against Russia in 2018: having the defensive line pass the ball between them for like 30 seconds LOL) OK for Pressure as main strategy (until Cahill's goal, which afterwards, should be deactivated). Please take an extra look on that aspect (shirt names) on their games against Croatia (let's say, the Kovač brothers and the Leko players, maybe also Šimić) and Italy (Cannavaro) please. |
