I guess Guerrero can probably replace Villanueva at this point, he's the first player to be top scorer at 3 Copa Americas and only 4 people have scored more goals in the history of the tournament. Plus he captained them at their first World Cup in 36 years, and to only their third ever Copa America final, plus leading them to 2 third place finishes too. He has done so much for Peru and will surely go down as a legend for their national team.

Gallese, Advíncula, Zambrano and Yotún can all be named in reserves

IMO Juan Valdivieso deserves to be at the 23-men squad, instead of Rafael Asca.

I believe if Juan Joya is mentioned, so Seminario has to be mentioned in the reserves too. Or maybe both should be out.

I agree with Guerrero on first 23.

Here's what I suggest. If any of you has questions about some choices, I'll give my explanations.

Spoiler: show
GOALKEEPERS:

Rafael ASCA and Juan VALDIVIESO

DEFENDERS:

Héctor CHUMPITAZ, Guillermo DELGADO and Julio MELÉNDEZ as CBs
Eloy CAMPOS and Jaime DUARTE as RBs
Rubén DÍAZ and Nicolás FUENTES as LBs

MIDFIELDERS:

Roberto CHALLE, José VELÁSQUEZ as DMFs/CMFs and César CUETO as CMF/AMF
Teófilo CUBILLAS, Alberto TERRY and Julio César URIBE as pure AMFs
Nolberto SOLANO as RMF

FORWARDS:

Alberto GALLARDO and Juan Carlos OBLITAS as LWFs
Paolo GUERRERO and Hugo SOTIL as SS/CFs
Teodoro FERNÁNDEZ, Pedro LEÓN and Valeriano LÓPEZ as pure CFs

RESERVES:

GOALKEEPERS:

Pedro GALLESE, Ramón QUIROGA and as third choice I consider one among Juan HONORES, Luis RUBIÑOS and Ottorino SARTOR

DEFENDERS:

Luis ADVÍNCULA, Andrés BEDOYA, Orlando DE LA TORRE, José FERNÁNDEZ, Jorge OLAECHEA, Percy OLIVARES, Christian RAMOS, Juan REYNOSO, Alberto RODRÍGUEZ, Juan Manuel VARGAS

if Ismael SORIA played for Peru, I would have him probably instead of FERNÁNDEZ or OLIVARES but I couldn't find any info that suggests that
Other possible choices are Eleazar SORIA and José SOTO

MIDFIELDERS:

Víctor BENÍTEZ, Segundo CASTILLO, Christian CUEVA, Juan JAYO, Germán LEGUÍA, Ramón MIFFLIN, Roberto PALACIOS, Alfredo QUESADA, Jorge SOTO, Yoshimar YOTÚN

Other possible choices are José DEL SOLAR and Renato TAPIA

FORWARDS:

Jorge ALCALDE, Jefferson FARFÁN, Óscar GÓMEZ SÁNCHEZ, Juan MUÑANTE, Franco NAVARRO, Claudio PIZARRO, Oswaldo RAMÍREZ, Percy ROJAS, Juan SEMINARIO, Alejandro VILLANUEVA

Other possible choices are André CARRILLO, Roberto DRAGO and Édison FLORES

Great job!

What about Juan Manuel Vargas replacing Nicolas Fuentes in the 23? I believe Ruben Diaz is the indisputable starter.

IMHO this team needs a RWF.

Indeed. Maybe Muñante in, Pedro Leon out.

That was my doubt. Take in mind that Solano can be deployed in that position but if you want a proper right winger, then Muñante is the best option as Bola suggests.

Placing Jorge Soto above Segundo Castillo Varela is questionable. While the former played over 100 matches with the Peruvian national team, he never achieved anything. Titina Castillo, on the other hand, did. Even in Peruvian football books, she is recognized as one of the best midfielders our game has ever produced.

Furthermore, the most ideal formation for our football is without a doubt the 4-3-3, no matter how you look at it. The 4-2-3-1 may work for us (although whether we like it or not, it can be transformed into 4-3-3), but we have never been known for playing with WB, physical play is not our thing and that was recently proven in the qualifiers for this World Cup.

Although I could also disagree with Marcos Calderón, but he has a Copa América title and that's why he's here, there's no denying it (although if that were the case, Jack Greenwell should share the podium with Calderón, right?), if there's an ideal candidate, especially for the legacy he left for our football during the early 1970s, it's Waldir Pereira (Didí). He was undoubtedly the one who started this and put us higher in the World Cup performance rankings with a 7th place, competing with more competitive teams during that World Cup than in the Copa América itself.

Also in 1961, during the qualifying process for the World Cup in Chile, Calderón made a huge mistake by leaving us out of the tournament, not only due to poor planning, but also by leaving out key figures.

Another case would be what happened in 1978 during the World Cup in Argentina. We already know what happened, the 6-0 defeat against the host country, but it is said that he was one of those who "backed out" in that match.

Calderón is a popular choice in our country; however, the situations I mentioned make him look like a manager who was fortunate to be there at the right time to win that cup.
