Infos :

Willy "Den Bomber" Geurts was used several times as a substitute. He was featured in several pictures of the announced squad, but was not retained in a team relying on strong defense to deploy a counter-attacking play enabled by a reinforced midfielder to serve Ceulemans and Vandenbergh. In an interwiew, Willy Geurts said :" I was in the 23 of Thys. But, a few days before departure, I received a letter from the Belgian Union. Thys had to fired one name to arrive at 22. An uncertain player - I think it was François Van Der Elst - was finally able to go in Spain. It’s the biggest disappointment in my career. I never digested it".

Guy Thys wanted to include Juan Lozano for the upcoming 1982 World Cup in Spain.Originally, Lozano had hoped to be called up by his native Spain, but neither Laszlo Kubala nor Santamaria, his successor as Spanish National Team Manager, contacted him. With time running out and the World Cup approaching, he accepted Belgium’s call. Lozano had still retained his Spanish citizenship, therefore the Belgian Federation requested the Belgian Government to fast track Lozano’s citizenship process in time for the World Cup. Under normal circumstances, this process would have taken up to a year. However, the Federation wanted it to be resolved in a matter of months. It seemed such a formality, that Lozano had even participated in Belgium squad’s pre-World Cup. The Belgian politicians were infuriated when they saw a photograph of Lozano in Belgian uniform, before a decision was made on their part. The Belgian Chamber had already passed, however, the Senate did not and Lozano’s World Cup dream was over.

Albert Cluytens played an active part in the qualifying phase and scored a goal at Landowsne Road against Ireland. He was ultimately not called.

René Vandereycken was part of the team sent to the world cup. Only an injury just before the competition prevented him from participating which benefited Jos Daerden, called up at the last minute to replace him.

Michel de Wolf was regularly employed in central defense as a substitute. At the last moment, Maurice de Schrijvers, tested in a friendly match against Denmark just before the World Cup, was preferred to him.

Michel Preud'homme was an indisputable holder in the trio of Belgian goalkeepers. An injury prevented him from playing the World Cup, Guy Thys falling back on the second choice formed by Theo Custers
