Hey guys, as we had the same thread four years ago, I thought it would be a good idea to have one for the 2018 WC as well ;)
What teams do you consider as favorites on the cup? Who will be the stars of the tournament?
Russia opened the tournament with a 5:0 against Saudi Arabia. Beautiful goals by Cheryshev, especially the second one ;)

Sampaoli is a mess.
Calling injured or almost injured players (Lanzini, Romero, Agüero, Rojo, Biglia etc).

Calling players without baggage in their teams this year (Again Romero, Caballero, Mascherano, Rojo)

Not calling players because doesn't like Messi and company or calling them too late (Icardi, Dybala, Armani, Squelotto)

Throwing out players like Garay, Icardi for "wrongs" behaviors but forgiven Higuain for not going to a friendly matches.

Given 40 matches a players who always play bad like Higuain, Di Maria, Mascherano. And just 2 or less to other players...

So the list of 23 is totally a crap.
That is way Simeone didn't want to be the Manager or DT, for the childish behavior of the group (the same players who played bad since 3 years ago).

What we can expect if Players controls all the process and the DT is a clown without authority.

You are watching too much Fox Sports

We should give credit to these flop gods from Argentina, they are playing bad from like 3-4 years and they still have reached 3 international finals...wonder how many finals were won by the "greatest team ever", Netherlands of the 1970's for example.

To make a summary from my point of view, with everything that has been said and done here in Argentina.
This is a process that did not start well, Sampaoli was hired in the last matches of the qualifiers, he did not have enough time to work or at least to be able to transmit his ideas. Sampaoli is a coach who has a way of working similar to that of Bielsa, the difference is that Bielsa had about 4 years to expand his ideas better (he took over after Passarella was fired).
He barely had about a year, with a nt that lives under an atmosphere of anarchy, without a game identity, which went from being directed by Sabella, Bauza and then Sampaoli, which are three very different styles of playing football.
The players were chosen according to those that were available and are liked by Sampaoli to play that style of play. Now I think that a mistake was made trying to experiment with formations never before used or that at least these players were never used to playing them, added to the fact that some players played in places where they had never done it before, this result was the product of improvisation, something that the Argentine national team has suffered for years.

Sampaoli should play with this formation to face Nigeria.

None, football has changed so much from the tactical to the physical, that does not mean that in a hypothetical participation in a championship they can not achieve something.

In WC 2014 against who important they played?
All the fixture was to Argentina plays the final, they win against low selections. Only against Netherlands was his true obstacle and they passed in penalty kicks.

In America against who they have to loose? Only against Brazil or do you think with all respect that Venezuela or Peru have the players and duty to win American cup?

And you are hoping to get better some players who plays bad 3 years ago.

Nigeria 5 - 2
Spain 6 - 0
Croatia 3 - 0

And do you think only winning Nigeria you pass to 8vos. Good luck with that.

Well, look at their opponents and you'll see the difference. Netherlands of the 70s lost their finals against the strongest German team ever and against the strongest Argentine team ever, reaching those two finals at those tournaments means IMO much more than winning a WC in recent times..
But tbh: if that current Argentine side would have played in 1974 WC for example, probably even Zaire and Haiti would have wiped the floor with them

Two of those matches are friendlies, that do not matter in a competition like this. It would be preferable for Argentina to be eliminated since the squad is fissured. Switzerland beat Spain in 2010 and that did not mean that Switzerland was a great team that would win the world cup.

Now there ignorants that believe that Croatia is favorite to win this WC on facebook for example.

44 years ago, really? I will take that like sarcasm, it was another sport, there is a big gap between that football and the one of the last 25 years.

The part with Zaire and Haiti was a joke, the first part was meant serious.
Netherlands 74/78, Argentina 78, Poland 74, Germany 74 or Brazil 78 were all far better than the current Argentine squad, no matter if they played 44 or 40 years before
Apart from Messi, Agüero and maybe Mascherano, no player of the current Argentine squad would have managed to get a place in their starting XI in 1978: Caballero vs Fillol? Perez vs Ardiles? Rojo vs Passarella? Meza vs. Houseman? They played in different time but still they were far better than those modern clowns..

I agree. Therefore considering that Nigeria defeated Iceland, Nigeria should easily win against Argentina.

Shame that they have nothing to show for it, Sweden more than deserved at least a point, especially when they should have had an obvious penalty in the first half. If Sweden play like they did today against Mexico, then Germany could still be in trouble...

They should be thankful that Boateng is banned at least, Sule is much better than him these days.
