Road to the 1986 World Cup, the World Cup that was originally going to play in Colombia, but at last, it was going to play in his country, Mexico, he had with the national team 57 matches, scoring 12 goals, in the 1986 World Cup, he starter all 5 matches as left-sided attacking midfielder, porting the number 22 into his shirt, remembering the legendary scissor kick volley goal against Bulgaria in the Round of 16, voted of FIFA as the "Best Goal In History of the World Cup" by fans in 2018. In the tournament, he scored 1 goal and made 1 assist, where Mexico made his best performance, even nowadays, reaching the quarterfinals, losing against the next runner-ups West Germany on penalties.
