Pompéia, a nickname he earned as a boy in his hometown of Itajubá, came from drawing the sailor Popeye, and since he couldn’t pronounce the character’s name correctly, he ended up being called Pompéia.

As a child, he worked in a circus, but his real dream was to become a football player, and he would only leave Itajubá to play in Rio de Janeiro football if that dream ever came true.

Another part of the story is that he first played as a center-forward. In a friendly match against Bonsucesso, in his hometown, the starting goalkeeper fell ill, and since he was tall and big, the coach put him in goal. The Rio club’s staff were impressed by the acrobatic leaps of the makeshift goalkeeper.

That was the beginning of his journey and the realization of his dream of playing in Rio football. He wore América’s jersey for 11 years, closing his glorious story in 1960 with a title, after two runner-up finishes, and even reaching the Brazilian national team.

Pompéia made many mistakes; he never came close to Castilho’s reliability, Gilmar’s composure, or Taffarel’s luck in penalty shootouts. His great asset was avoiding every artist’s worst fear, that the audience would fall asleep in the stands. Any ball that came toward his goal was reason enough for Pompéia to throw himself at it with drama and exaggeration, as if shouting: Look how well I can do my job! His amazing leaps gave him the nickname of "Constellation"
