So yeah, Zelic was quite an interesting player to analyse. I watched a lot of his matches with the NT during 93-97, and some club matches (mainly Dortmund).

I dunno, I guess I was expecting a bit more from him. I believed he'd be like an Aussie regista, a highly technical sweeper/midfielder with good passes and that wouldn't be afraid to have a blast at the goal.

In reality, Zelic looked like a ghost in a lot of the matches. With Borussia, he actually displayed some decent passes, but seemed out of sync with the team, unable to join and build attacking runs, nor bothering much with defensive duties.

For the NT, it was basically the same thing, but playing as a DMF. Although a big-framed guy, his style of play wasn't physical at all.

That said, I have to give some credit to his set piece skill and shooting. He was probably the best free-kicker of that aussie generation, capable of giving the ball some great curl and power. It's a shame he did not go for goal that often.
