Attack/Defence Awareness Card: Attack-MindedKerry Dixon joined from Reading for £175,000 as the team was rebuilt following near relegation to the Third Division and he made an immediate impact scoring twice as promotion favourites were beaten 5-0 on the opening day. Kerry scored 34 goals that year as the club claimed the Second Division title. Dixon was the second highest goal scorer in Chelsea's history, behind only Bobby Tambling. Blessed with the natural attributes which make a top striker; two good feet, outstanding aerial ability and blistering pace. In his first season in the top flight Kerry scored 24 goals to win the Golden Boot and take his Chelsea tally to 70 in just 101 games, earning a call up to the England squad & attending World Cup 1986; but the effective Beardsley/Lineker partnership restricted Dixon to just a six minute cameo performance against Poland. Unfortunately, a serious muscle injury in January 1986 slowed Kerry's progress though and he was never the same player again. Along with Dixon’s form, Chelsea struggled two consecutive poor seasons (1986 – 1988) ending up returning to Division Two in 1988. Fortunately, it was a revitalization for Kerry Dixon who scored 26 goals which immediately led The Blues back to the First Division. Back to the top flight, he scored 20 to help Chelsea finished fifth in May 1990
