Cong Anqing is a former centre back, who could play also on the left half and right half. His career began in 1946 at Huaqing FC. Later, he joined the Northeast China FC in 1951 and played there for three years. He then transferred to Dalian Shipyard FC in 1954. The following year, he joined First Machinery Industry FC, where he remained until his retirement in 1962.
Cong was the first generation of national football players in PRC. He had strong judgment, quick response, good jumping ability, adept at timely covering, and unique interception techniques. He was selected as one of the top 30 football players of the year in China in 1951.
