He was promoted to the 1st team only at the age of 18 which grabbed the attention of Hassan Shehata who was managing Egypt U-20 back then. He played a vital role in winning 2003 U-20 African Championship and qualifying to the U-20 world cup in UAE. His performance in the World Cup caught the eye of bigger club Enppi and also Marco Tardelly's, who was managing Egypt's first team. Zaki made his international debut in 2004. After Zaki's performance in 2006 AFCON, starting 4 of 6 matches, scoring the winning goal in the semifinals against relentless Senegal; he was signed by Egyptian giants Zamalek, and in no time he became their Ace striker for the following couple of years. Zaki was picked by Shehata once more in 2008 AFCON frontline but this time he played all 6 matches, he was one of the tournament's stars scoring 4 goals including 2 in the semi's against Ivory Coast and was picked in the tournament's best 11 after winning the trophy for the 2nd time. His performance caught the eye of some European finest. Which lead him to make a move to the Premier League next summer joining Wigan Athletic. Where he scored 10 goals in his first 10 appearances including a brace against Liverpool. Zaki's performance and goal scoring ratio made him one of the most exciting players in Europe during the end of 2008, which lead him to be nominated to the CAF player of the year award alongside Adebayor, Aboutreika, Essian and Drogba. Unfortunately the thrive of his quick success with his lack of discipline started to fracture his relationship with Steve Bruce. His performances kept dropping rapidly leading him to play less minutes every match. On the following season he was loaned to Hull City where he played scoreless 6 matches before he moved back to Zamalek. He was even dropped by Shehata in his 2009 Confederation's cup final 23 players list. Zaki had a short but incredible peak. He left some memorable moments for both Egypt's and Wigan's fans. He was an important member of Shehata's golden generation who won the AFCON treble between 2006 and 2010. He was pivotal in 2 of them. |
