Attack MindedInfoOne of the most technically gifted Egyptian players, Arguably the best dribbler Egypt has ever produced. Hazem was unstoppable during his prime with his unique style of dribbling counting on his close control and sharp quick sudden turns instead of trickery and footwork. His final defence splitting passing ability was killer due to his quick thinking and vision.
Hazem was the last member of Zamalek SC famous (Emam) dynasty, following the footsteps of his father Hamada and even surpassing him. He became a regular starter for Zamalek's first team during 1994/95 season after the departure of the star man Emanuel Amunike, and soon his talent and special touch was noticed.
After the end of the season, Hazem led Egypt U-23 to win the African U-23 cup in Zimbabwe, his performance led Ruud Krol, the newly appointed manager for Egypt's first team to call him in the preps to AFCON 1996. In which 20 years old Hazem started all 4 matches and was by far one of the best performers in the competition, he was picked by the CAF in the tournament's best 11. Hazem became one of Africa's hottest prospects at the time, grabbing the attention of some of Serie A clubs. Including Parma, Lazio, but he settled for Udinese Calcio, to be the first Egyptian to ever play in an Italian club.
But unfortunately, Hazem failed to empress, not only because his shy conservative personality that made it hard for him to adapt; but also because his lack of physicality and stamina which was a really important factor in Italian football during the 90s. In addition to that; Hazem lacked any tactical flexibility, he can only perform as a number 10. So, he was struggling in Alberto Zaccheroni's 4-3-3 tactics, specially with players like Amoroso and Bierhoff.
Emam suffered from endless injuries due to his lack of strength, and that stood between him and developing in the club. But Despite being out of the squad for most of the time, Emam's performance with Egypt during AFCON 1998 proved his talent again by being the main creative force in winning Egypt's 4th continental trophy. The Dutch side De Graafschap showed interest in loaning the player after his performance and Udinese agreed. Emam enjoyed a very good half season in the Eredivisie, scoring in two occasions and assisting in five.
His story with injuries and being constantly benched made him decide to leave Europe heading back to Egypt, captaining his home club from 2000 till 2008. Even though he lost a lot of his pace and speed, but he was still a magician. He led Zamalek to win 3 Egyptian premier league titles, one Egyptian cup and a CAF champions League. He has 85 caps and scored 15 international goals.
