Lico began his journey with Flamengo in 1980, in the match Real Sociedad 0 x 2 Flamengo. From an early stage, he stood out for his skill and intelligence on the field, qualities that would make him an important player wherever he went. He specialized in playing as a playmaker in midfield, but at the time, Flamengo's squad included greats like Andrade, Adílio, and Zico, so he was eventually improvised as a right winger. Wearing the Flamengo jersey, he contributed to the club’s triumphs in the State Championships of 1978, 1979, and 1981, the Brazilian Championships of 1980 and 1982, as well as the Copa Libertadores and the famous Intercontinental Cup victory over Liverpool in 1981. Lico was considered the second-best Flamengo player of that time, only behind Zico. A perfectionist both on and off the pitch, he made short dribbling his greatest weapon to break through the defensive lines.
