INFO:A bit clumsy with his almost two meters in height, the center-back Henrique, a breakout star of the 1956 Rio de Janeiro state championship with Associação Atlética Portuguesa-RJ, arrived in Salvador in January 1957, together with midfielder Joe, also from Portuguesa, upon the recommendation of coach Lourival Lorenzi, known as “Mariposa.”
A tall and strong player, he had a physique that intimidated attackers, always tireless in protecting the tricolor’s back line. Affectionately called Henricão (“Big Henrique”) by the fans, or “Ebony Giant,” a nickname coined by Bahia radio broadcaster Carlos Lima (in reference to his skin color and his size), he formed a formidable defensive partnership with Vicente Arenari during the 1959 Taça Brasil.
Despite his height, he didn’t rely on his privileged physique to rough up attackers. He played fair and clean, unbeatable in the air, with excellent positional awareness. He avoided unnecessary flair but played with intelligence, perfect in anticipation and tackles. On top of that, he enjoyed delighting the fans with fantastic surges forward, carrying the ball from defense to attack, breaking through opposing lines to the joy of the stands (well before Luiz “Chevrolet” Pereira, also from Bahia and a Palmeiras defender, who became famous for this move). Pelé, who often faced him at the peak of his career, praised Henricão for his fairness and effectiveness, especially in aerial play.
