Edu is one of the greatest idols in the history of America Football Club, being the second-highest scorer in the history of the Rio de Janeiro club with 267 goals scored between 1966 and 1974. He is always remembered for his refined football, marked by short dribbles, precise passes and long balls, always geared toward attacking play.
For the Brazilian National Team, Edu played three matches, winning the Rio Branco Cup in 1967. He did not achieve greater prominence in the Seleção, most likely because he had to compete for a spot with none other than Pelé, as well as other number 10s such as Roberto Rivellino, Paulo César Lima, Ademir da Guia, and Dirceu Lopes, in what was a golden era of Brazilian football given the quality of its players.
Edu, who is Zico’s brother, was also an idol for the fans of Vasco (1975), Bahia (Bahian champion in 1975), Flamengo (1976), Colorado (one of the clubs that later merged to form the current Paraná Clube, where he played from 1976 to 1978 and was top scorer of the Paraná State Championships in 1976 and 1978), Joinville (1978), Brasília (1979), and Campo Grande in 1980 and 1981, where he ended his career, which was marked by the quality of his play and his loyalty in competition with his fellow professionals.
