Roberto Chery (1896–1919) was a Uruguayan goalkeeper who played for Peñarol and the Uruguay national team. Remembered as one of the earliest tragic figures in South American football, he became immortalized for his extraordinary courage during the 1919 South American Championship (now the Copa América) in Rio de Janeiro.
A talented and reliable goalkeeper with a tall stature, slender and agile frame, Chery was part of a legendary Peñarol side alongside stars such as José Piendibene, Isabelino Gradín, and Antonio Campolo. His impressive performances helped Peñarol win the 1918 Uruguayan Championship, earning him a call-up to the Uruguay national team by head coach Severino Castillo as the understudy to the goalkeeper Cayetano Saporiti for the 1919 South American Championship.
Chery's only appearance for Uruguay came on 17 May 1919, in a match against Chile at Estádio das Laranjeiras in Rio de Janeiro. During the game, he bravely caught a powerful shot from a Chilean attacker, but the impact caused a severe abdominal injury, rupturing a hernia. He was immediately taken to a local hospital, where he remained for two weeks. Despite medical efforts, Chery died on 1 June 1919, the day after the tournament concluded. The championship was ultimately won by Brazil after a memorable final against Uruguay.
Known affectionately as "El Poeta" ("The Poet") or "El Poeta del Arco" ("The Poet of the Goal"), Chery earned these nicknames because of his love for literature and poetry. He composed many verses dedicated to his beloved club.
