He could either play as a central defender or a right back.

A youth player at Brescia Calcio, Negro joined Bologna F.C. 1909 in 1990, and had his Serie A debut against Genoa C.F.C. on 28 October, amassing over 50 overall appearances in his first two professional seasons.
After a quick return with Brescia, he then went on to have a 12-year stint with Rome's S.S. Lazio. Scored an own goal in a December 17, 2000 derby against A.S. Roma, which eventually lifted the scudetto (the previous year, Negro had helped Lazio win it).
Having joined A.C. Siena in 2005, Negro scored a dramatic 85th-minute goal to defeat former side Lazio 2–1 on the final day of the 2006–07 season; without it, Siena would have been relegated to the second division, instead of A.C. Chievo. He appeared a further 50 times in the league in two campaigns, for a total of 363.
In August 2008, almost one year after retiring, 36-year old Negro underwent a trial at Serie B club Modena FC , but nothing came of it.

On November 16, 1994, Negro made his debut for the Italian national team, in a match against Croatia for the Euro 1996 qualifiers (1–2 home loss). He received a total of eight caps with the azzurri, and was selected in the squad for the 2000 European Football Championship, where the nation finished second.
Previous, Negro was an essential member of the U21s, as they defeated Portugal at the 1994 European Championships, in Montpellier.
