Daniel Fonseca was a centre forward, capable at playing in all attacking positions. Grown up at Club Nacional, he played 41 matches and scored 13 goals in the first team from 1985 to 1990. He transferred to Italy, where he joined Cagliari, scoring 17 goals in 52 games in two seasons. During his time with the Rossoblu, he played several times as winger, mainly on the left side. He joined Napoli in 1992 and arguably had his best two seasons, scoring 39 times in 69 matches. He left the Partenopei in 1994 for Roma, where he had three good seasons, appearing 79 times and scoring 28 goals. His downfall began when he joined Juventus in 1997 because of many injuries he suffered throughout four seasons. He still managed to play 69 matches and score 18 goals. He retired in 2003 after short and unsuccessful spells at River Plate, Club Nacional and Como. He gained 30 caps for Uruguay and scored 10 goals.
Stopped by many injuries and a lack of consistency during his whole career, Fonseca was nonetheless a very good striker. He was reactive and effective inside the box thanks to a great heading ability in addition to a good leap. His favourite foot was the left but he also used the right many times, showing good accuracy with it as well. Gifted with a nice physique, he could challenge his opponents in physical duels with the help of superb speed, technique and dribbling ability. He had good shooting ability, showing it especially from difficult positions, with first touches and volleys. He was dangerous from free kick, could give the ball high effect and during his time at Napoli he proved to be also a good penalty taker. Moreover, he was a nice passer, mostly when he delivered long balls, characteristic that was very helpful during his two seasons at Cagliari when he was used on the flank.
