INFO: A leader on and off the field. This is Claudio Roberto Pires Duarte, or simply Claudião, as he is known. Lateral-right of good technique and a lot of dedication within the four lines, he acted in one of the most successful decades of the history of the International. During his career as a player, Cláudio played only with the red jersey. From the base categories of the Club, as soon as it rose to the professionals, in 1969, it gained the title gaucho of that year. From there the achievements did not stop. By the end of his career, he has won titles in all the seasons he has played.
The great team of the 70's that had its peak in the Brazilian bicampeonato of 1975 and 1976 began to be formed by Daltro Menezes taking advantage of the young ones arisen in the base. In 1969, Inter's juniors had been gaucho champions with an excellent campaign. Daltro used many of these young talents to form the group that would be multi-champion later. In this group were Flavio, Escurinho, Jangada, Luiz Carlos, Paulo Cesar Carpegiani and Claudião himself It was very good to participate in this team. It was a formidable team. I had the opportunity to play in all the achievements of the celebrated Octa Gaucho.
However, a series of knee injuries shortened the career of the good right back. The problems occurred precisely at the height of their physical and technical form. He was captain of the team, president of the first professional athletes union in Rio Grande do Sul, he was doing very well that year. And he was also practically in the squad for the national team that would play in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, he recalls. At the end of the year 1977, on the eve of the call for the Seleção, after two knee surgeries the medical department of Inter announced that Claudio would not have more chances to continue in football.
In March of 1978, Claudião worked firm in the medical department of the Inter still seeking the recovery of its injury. It was when then-president Marcelo Feijó and soccer vice-president Gilberto Medeiros asked him to take on Inter's job for a week while they sought replacement for then-coach Carlos Gaineti. Claudio remained for four months in charge and was the youngest coach to run Inter, only 26 years old.
In addition to player and coach Cláudio Duarte was also technical supervisor in 1979, when Inter was undefeated Brazilian champion, and technical director in 2003, winning the bicampeonato gaucho. The tough way he commands the teams contrasts with the friendly and welcoming way he treats the friends he has made all these years in Beira-Rio. While talking to the reporter for this matter, Claudião was approached by officials from various departments of the Club and hugged everyone with great affection. I have a lot of friends here and it's great to see the club's growth as an entity and this is reflected in the field, he says.
When he came to play against Inter in Beira-Rio and enter the visitor's dressing room, he was approached by Seu Hervínio, the club's oldest employee, who said with tears in his eyes. You can not play against us, he said. This is recognition for your work and dedication to all who are part of this Club.
